Recent ACLP results

Ohio ACLP 2008 Results
Twelve communities participated in the ACLP Ohio projects in 2008- their project results stem from a $3,000 investment made by the Appalachian Regional Commission and the Governor’s Office of Appalachia.  Here’s what they achieved:  
 
 
Vinton County – a Stitch in Time
Results:
21 new quilt barns
26 new businesses/organizations involved – all but 2 were new to the project
Approximately 900 people involved
Merchant sales – not reached
Draw 2,500 visitors – not reached
 
Jackson Grow-to-Hoe Project
Results:
4,100 pounds of potatoes (410 families given one 10 lb bag)
156 quarts of spaghetti sauce
72 quarts of tomato juice
12 bushels of green beans
150 pounds of lettuce
Sweet corn, peppers, tomatoes, beets, cucumbers, squash and radishes also distributed in smaller quantities
50 chickens
Gleaned apples which have not yet been processed into apple sauce
2,341.5  hours of volunteer time
Project learning: estimates on yield per acre were considerably off
 
Athens Photographic Project
Results:
Photo Sales:  $3,766
Volunteers: 18
Collaborators: 12
 
Hillsboro SWAP
Results:
Park usage has increased by 20 per week, but they feel the playground equipment will be the largest draw.
Raised $17,000 and contributed over $14,000 worth of volunteer labor and leveraged resources.
Got 5 other school organizations and two community organizations involved in the project.
 
Manchester – Weekends in the Park
Results:
1,701 People Participated
98 Volunteers
Juvenile crime Rate – Unknown at this time

3 new merchant services

2 businesses reported an increase in sales
 
Brush Creek – TWP Community Park Project
Results:
100+ people attended Carnival and Chicken Noodle Dinner events
30+ families have been actively involved with the park>
$9,400 raised, $2,735 in volunteer hours, and over $10,000 in donated equipment time
 
Chesterhill MGC
Results:
69 have taken Underground Railroad tours; 30 scheduled for March, and 70 for April- May
2 new tour guides were trained
40 new volunteers (many from outside Chesterhill)
2 part time jobs created
$785 in revenue to the community was realized from tour-takers
300 kids received information from Senior Storytellers about Chesterhill and their family history
$33,000+ in cash, donations, and in-kind services for the project
 
Waverly – Erie Canal
Results:
Trail usage is up
Brochure with coupons to be used to track impact is being developed
200+ kids came for the festival in November despite the cold.
 
McArthur – Rough Magic, Friends Community Players
Results:
$3,200 in pre-sales
$800 raised
$66,645 in total leveraged resources (includes 5,476 volunteer hours)
 
Chesterhill Broadband
Results:
Village voted make BroadBand a public utility
System and antenna installed – up and running
25 users on free system
 
Nelsonville - We Feed Em
Results:
500 chickens raised (100 to 3 local producers, 100 to food pantries and families in need.  Approximately 150 birds died from heat, predators, natural causes, etc.)
5 people learned how to raise and process chickens
A network of producers, support people, and processors has been established to enable more community members to participate in the program.
 
Woodsfield – Lifelong Learners
Results:
553 new library card holders
$1,300 raised
285 volunteer hours donated to the project  ($2,850 value!)
3 adult child pairs completed the reading program
